Bullying or victimization of a child is when he or she is exposed, once or several times to negative actions on the part of one or more other students. Children generally do not tell their parents they are being victimized. The negative effects of bullying are numerous and far reaching. Bullying is an ongoing epidemic in societies around the world. According to recent studies, nearly 3.2 million children in 6-10th grades report being bullied. In a recent survey conducted by FASTDefense: of 35 classes totaling approximately 950 students in the Upstate N.Y. area, nearly 90% of students surveyed reported being bullied at least once during the school year! Preventing bullying and helping bullies at a young age can not only help children being victimized at the moment but also make schools safer, reduce student absenteeism, and reduce crime in our communities.
