Violence in schools between students and against faculty has reached an all time high. Reasons for such violence are yet to be determined but research is being done to pinpoint a cause and provide solutions. Until reasonable and effective solutions are provided to prevent such violence, school faculty and staff are often expected to control a hostile conflict between students or against themselves or bystander.

Verbal commands to STOP infrequently work to suspend a fight between two or more students. This is due primarily to auditory exclusion and tunnel vision in the fighting students induced by anger, fear and/or extreme stress. These are but a few side effects brought on by the human “fight or flight” response to danger which naturally occurs during verbal and physical confrontations.

Without proper training, controlling students without injury to student or teacher is difficult at best and often more dangerous than letting the fight progress. This FASTDefense Program provides faculty and staff with essential skills for handling student to student and student to teacher conflicts and assaults.

FASTDefense Managing Disruptive Student Program

8 student max/class, 2hr. class duration

Topics include but not limited to:

FASTDefense Verbal De-Escalation Skills- Effective verbal skills providing the teacher or staff member with the ability to diffuse potentially brewing situations before they become violent. Advanced verbal and physical boundary setting.

FASTDefense Student Control Skills- A series of control skills designed to provide the teacher with maximum control without excessive exertion. These controls allow redirection of the student without the chance of unnecessary injury.

FASTDefense Student Separation Skills- Simply stepping between two angry, scared students not only places the teacher/faculty member at great risk but often leaves one student susceptible to further assault. Active redirection skills and triangulation skills are taught providing effective non-violent separation while preventing injury to students and teachers.

FASTDefense Counter Assault Skills – Unfortunately all too often we hear about a teacher or staff member being violently assaulted by a student. While infrequent these incidents do happen. Proper training can reduce chances of serious injury to both staff and student. Key skills include the ability to defend against immediate assault and retreat, not engage the student. Emphasis is placed on attempting to control the student in a manner that is safe from injury to the student.

This course focuses on verbal & physical situations where a conflict between students or between student and teacher must be stopped before injuries occur.
